Events

WEAAD events can be serious educational experiences or simply a fun get together with a view to celebrate positive ageing. Your choice will depend on the audience you are trying to reach and your purpose for having an event.

Some of the types of events you may consider are:

  • a morning or afternoon tea with a presentation on positive ageing
  • a community walk – with participants wearing purple to draw attention to the cause
  • a forum on elder abuse
  • an educational workshop on elder abuse
  • a dance for older people

To make your event a success you will need to

  • Find an appropriate venue
  • Invite people to join in
  • Make sure you have appropriate insurance in case anything goes wrong
  • Consider how you want to incorporate the topic of elder abuse
  • Have a great host / hostess on the day to ensure everyone participates and has a good time
  • Think about catering
  • Look at getting an expert or celebrity to be involved
  • Promote the event – let your local press know what is happening (check out the DSS Publicity Guide for more help on promoting your community event)
